We all know that it is essential to pursue the right certification for auditors if we want to work in this field. After all, a solid certificate helps validate our competencies, demonstrate professionalism, and open many doors in the market.
However, when the topic is quality management systems (or any other management systems), we often come across several acronyms. Terms such as ISO, PDCA, IATF, 5W2H, etc., are common in our daily routine—and when it comes time to become certified, these acronyms appear again!
Exemplar Global and IRCA are important bodies for those working in our field, but we do not always fully understand what each one represents. For example, if you want to audit locally, in your region, which one is more important? And what if your goal is to audit internationally?
That is why today we will explore the differences between these institutions so you can choose consciously and take off in your auditing career! With that said, let’s get into the content.
Exemplar Global or IRCA: the ideal certification for auditors?
To begin with, it’s important to clarify: by law, it is not mandatory to have Exemplar Global or IRCA certification, but each serves different purposes and may often be required during hiring processes.
Here at QMS, for example, having some of these certifications is a decisive factor! Therefore, it is worth choosing based on your professional goals and the level of credibility you want to convey. To do this, let’s understand each institution.
Exemplar Global (formerly RABQSA)
Exemplar Global is an Australian certification body that aims, according to its official website, to “promote best practices; certify individuals and training organizations; promote professional development.” It was created from the merger of three institutions:
- The Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) in the United States
- The Quality Society of Australasia (QSA)
- iNARTE (International Association for Radio, Telecommunications, and Electromagnetics)
Officially established in 2014, Exemplar Global certifies auditors and offers several courses in the field. It is widely recognized in Asia (Pacific region) and accepted globally.
Therefore, it is the ideal certification for auditors seeking to work with multinational companies, especially in Asia. Additionally, it is a good option for those who want an international certification with a slightly more accessible cost compared to IRCA.
IRCA – International Register of Certificated Auditors
IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) is directly connected to the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI).
IRCA, like the previous bodies, also certifies and recognizes management system auditors. Today, it is the most prestigious international auditor registry, widely recognized and valued by certification bodies around the world.
Thus, it is the ideal certification for auditors who want to work with international clients or certification bodies. It is also an excellent option for those seeking a credential with strong résumé impact. However, its cost is higher, as are its maintenance requirements.
An interesting fact: CQI (the institution responsible for IRCA) was granted a Royal Charter in the United Kingdom—an official document issued by the monarchy, giving it great authority and prestige.
According to CQI, the Royal Charter was granted as recognition of the organization’s “preeminence, public interest, stability, and permanence,” affirming its authority to award Certified Membership status to quality management professionals.
Conclusion: which certification is ideal for auditors?
Obviously, determining which certification is ideal for auditors is not a simple or universal formula. Much of the answer depends on your current work context and your goals as an auditing and management systems professional. Naturally, you must also consider the costs, requirements, and personal or financial values associated with each institution.
Exemplar Global is excellent and relatively more affordable than IRCA. It is a strong, flexible international option with high acceptance (as reputable as IRCA, or even more, in some Asian countries). Technically, Exemplar Global and IRCA are equivalent.
In any case, Exemplar Global and IRCA all represent excellent paths for professionalizing your career and pursuing new opportunities. All three institutions are recognized and valued, demonstrating that the auditor has undergone evaluation and certification of competencies. Especially if you want to work in a certification body, holding one of these credentials is essential for achieving success as a professional auditor.
